Naming baby girl 'Ghazal'

26-6-2017 | IslamWeb

Question:

Assalaamu alaykum. I would like to know if the name Ghazal (poetry, flirt) is disliked or forbidden in Islam. Thank you.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

We believe that you should not name your daughter "Ghazal" because the literal meaning of the Arabic word "Ghazal" is courting and flirting with women. Taaj Al-‘Aroos (an Arabic lexicon) reads, "Ghazal means courtship, speaking words of love, or flirting with women..." Ibn Seedah said, "Ghazal means flirtation with women."

Please refer to fatwas 82724 and 87262 about the criteria of naming the newborn.

Allah knows best.
