Learning etiquette of eating in Islam

Question:

Assalaamu alaykum Scholars. I have a question which has been bothering me recently. I am currently seeking knowledge, or this is what I intend to do, and I have a doubt regarding the manners of the students of knowledge regarding eating. After reading and listening to biographies of great scholars of the past, I came to know that they would hardly eat anything, just enough to keep themselves alive. Sometimes I try to emulate this behavior, and it does in fact help me to concentrate in the prayer, amongst other things. Could you explain the manners of eating of a student of knowledge in a detailed manner while also giving me examples? May Allaah bless you, Scholars.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We advise you to read the chapter about the Etiquette of Eating in Imaam An-Nawawi's book Riyaadh As-Saaliheen, which has been translated into the English language.

Also, please refer to fatwa ">163527.

Allah knows best.
