Question:

Assalaamu alaykum. I have heard that there are three ways in the Hanafi Madhab by which we can purify clothes when they become impure due to menstrual blood, urine, etc. Please clarify. May Allaah reward you.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

According to the Hanafis, there are three methods for purifying the impure clothes that are soiled by menstrual blood, urine, or any other impurity, as explained in the Hanafi book Tuhfat Al-Fuqahaa':

As for purification by washing, we say: it is agreed upon that the impurity is purified by washing in running water.

The same applies to pouring water over the impurity.

As for washing in utensils and whether it purifies it or not? According to Abu Haneefah and Muhammad, it purifies it. According to Abu Yoosuf, it does not purify the body, and this is his only reported view in this regard. As for purifying clothes, there are two reported views from him.

Allah knows best.
