Question:

Is there a Hadeeth which means that the sea asks for permission to drown the land? Is it a Saheeh Hadeeth? Which scholar graded it as Saheeh? Who is the narrator of the Hadeeth? Are there several narrations of it?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.

Ibn Al-Jawzi may Allaah have mercy upon him mentioned this Hadeeth and traced the chain of narrators back to ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattaab may Allaah be pleased with him who narrated from the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, that the sea nightly seeks the permission of Allaah The Almighty thrice to drown the land, but Allaah the Almighty forbids it. Ibn Al-Jawzi may Allaah have mercy upon him graded this Hadeeth as Dha‘eef (inauthentic). Al-Albaani may Allaah have mercy upon him is among the contemporary scholars who has also graded this Hadeeth as Dha‘eef.

Allaah Knows best.
