Verse about 'ten breastfeedings' was abrogated

Question:

Dear Brother. Assalaamu alaykum. I have two important questions on breastfeeding.
1. There is a hadith wherein ‘Aa’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said, “There was in the Quran [an verse which stipulated that] ten [was the number of] breastfeedings which created the relationship of mahram, then this was abrogated [by another verse which stipulated] five. The Messenger of Allah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, died and [the verse which stipulated five] was still being recited as part of the Quran.” [Reported by Muslim, 1452] Can you pinpoint the specific verse which ‘Aa’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, pointed out? Some Mutazilite preachers reject this hadith, stating that there is no such verse.
2. There is a hadith in Al-Muwatta’ by Imam Malik, Book 0, hadith number 1275, which says, “A man came to ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Umar when I was with him in the court-house, asking him about breastfeeding one who is grown up. ‘Abdullaah ibn ‘Umar said, ‘A man came to ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattaab and said, “I have a slave-girl with whom I used to have sexual relations, and my wife went to her and gave her her milk. Then, when I went to her, she said, ‘Stop, by Allah, I have given her my milk.’” ‘Umar said, “Punish her (your wife), and (continue to) go to your slave-girl, for (the ruling on) breastfeeding only applies to breastfeeding infants.” I want to know whther this hadith is authentic?
May Allah reward you for your efforts.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

The abrogated verse about breastfeeding to which ʻAa’ishah referred was cited in some authentic hadiths. Muslim narrated that ʻAa’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said, "It was revealed in the Quran that ten definite breastfeedings establish the Mahram (permanently unmarriageable) relationship, then it was also revealed that five definite breastfeedings establish it." [Muslim]

In a version of this hadith cited by Ibn Maajah and classified as authentic by Al-Albaani: "Among what was revealed of the Quran and was then abrogated is that nothing establishes the Mahram relationship except ten breastfeedings or five definite ones." [Ibn Maajah]

As for the statement that the verse to which ʻAa’ishah referred does not exist, then the answer is that this verse is not in the Mus-haf (physical copy of the Quran) because it was abrogated as a recited verse and as a ruling. Al-ʻIraaqi may Allaah have mercy upon him said, "An example of the verses whose ruling and recitation were both abrogated is the one referred to in the hadith in Saheeh Muslim on the authority of ʻAa’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her: 'Among what was revealed is that ten definite breastfeedings establish the Mahram relationship, then they were abrogated by five.'" [Al-Ghayth Al-Haamiʻ Sharh Jamʻ Al-Jawaamiʻ]

As for the hadith cited in Al-Muwatta’, its chain of narration is authentic, as stated by Shaykh ʻAbd Al-Qaadir Al-Arnaa‘oot in his book Tahqeeq Jaamiʻ Al-Usool of Ibn Al-Atheer.
