A miscarried fetus that intercedes on his mother's behalf

Question:

I am a 30-year-old woman and I had a miscarriage during the first two months of pregnancy. Will the miscarried fetus intercede on my behalf on the Day of Resurrection? Is there an accepted supplication in this regard?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alyhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Mu‘aath ibn Jabal may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “By He in whose Hand is my soul (i.e. Allaah), the miscarried fetus pulls its mother by its umbilical cord to Paradise if she sought the reward of Allaah (for its loss).” [Ibn Maajah and Ahmad. Al-Albaani: Saheeh (Authentic)]

However, this is restricted to a miscarried fetus into which the soul was breathed, and this takes place after 120 days of pregnancy. This is according to a Hadeeth narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim may Allaah have mercy upon them. Scholars unanimously agree on this. Al-Haafith Ibn Hajar may Allaah have mercy upon him said, “The scholars unanimously agree that the soul is breathed into the body after four months of pregnancy.” The same is stated by specialized physicians.

As for your question about an accepted supplication, the answer is that when the conditions are fulfilled and the impediments are eliminated in any supplication, Allaah The Almighty accepts it and rewards the person who supplicates. There are three essential conditions for the accepted supplication:

First: Supplicating to Allaah alone, with no partners besides Him, through His names and sublime attributes faithfully and sincerely. This is because supplication is an act of worship. Allaah The Exalted Says (what means): {And your Lord Says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.} [Quran 40:60]

In a Hadeeth Qudsi (Sacred Hadeeth), Allaah The Almighty Says: “If anyone does anything (i.e., any act of worship) in which he associates anyone else with Me, I shall abandon him to the one whom he associates with Me.” [Muslim]

Second: One must not supplicate for evil or for the severing of kinship ties. Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "The supplication of the slave (of Allaah) is granted as long as he does not supplicate for sin or for severing kinship ties, or he does not become impatient.” It was said, “O Messenger of Allaah, what do you mean by impatience?” He replied: “That he should say like this: ‘I supplicated and I supplicated but I did not find it being responded to,’ and therefore he becomes frustrated and abandons supplication.” [Muslim]

Third: Supplicating to Allaah The Almighty while one is attentive and certain of the response. Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "Supplicate to Allaah while you are certain of its acceptance, and know that Allaah does not answer a supplication from a heedless, distracted  heart.” [At-Tirmithi and Al-Haakim. Al-Albaani: Hasan (Sound)]

If these three conditions, or any one of them, are not fulfilled, Allaah The Almighty will not accept the supplication. The fulfillment of all these conditions is a prerequisite and absence of any of them is an impediment.

We remind you that when a Muslim is afflicted with any disaster, Allaah forgives his sins thereby. ‘Aa’ishah may Allaah be pleased with her the Mother of the Believers, narrated that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “No calamity befalls a Muslim but Allaah expiates some of his sins thereby, even if it were the prick of a thorn.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Abu Sa‘eed Al-Khudri and Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with them narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: "No fatigue, disease, sorrow, sadness, hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim - even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn - but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that.” And:  “A Muslim is not afflicted with fatigue, worry, sorrow, grief, sickness, or harm - even the pick of a thorn he receives  - but that Allaah expiates thereby some of his sins.” [Al-Bukhari]

Patience, seeking reward from Allaah as well as avoiding impatience and objection to the Divine Decree and fate of Allaah are also conditions for this.

Allaah Knows best.
