Question:

How authentic are the following sayings which many people attribute to the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam: "Paradise is under the mothers' feet" and "Anyone who learns the language of another people will be saved from their evil or their deception." May Allaah reward you.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.

The attribution of the saying: "Paradise is under the mothers' feet" is not established in the Sunnah, however its meaning is true and is narrated in an authentic prophetic narration. The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, ordered the man who had a mother and came seeking the permission of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, to join him in a battle, to stay with his mother because Paradise was at her feet.[Ahmad, An-Nasaa’i and Ibn Maajah]

As for the saying: "Anyone who learns the language of another people will be saved from their evil or their deception," we did not find any trace for it in any of the references of Hadeeth. However, it is true in meaning.

Allaah Knows best
