Question:

Asalamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, nowadays there are many foods like sweets or drinks that have certain indregends that can be made from plants but also animals. The problem is that many times it does not say wether it is made out of plants or animal indregends. If i have a drink for example and there is something in it that I am doubtful about. Should I drink it or throw it away?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

If you in doubt about the permissibility of any kind of food or drink, and you cannot authoritatively assert or predominantly judge it to be forbidden, then it is permissible for you to eat it or drink it. This is because, in principle, all kinds of food and drinks are permissible; Allah Says (what means): {It is He who created for you all of that which is on the earth.} [Quran 2:29]

No food or drink is to be judged forbidden unless the reason for the prohibition is confirmed.

The book entitled: Al-Fiqh Al-Islaami wa Adilatihi reads: “All the scholars have agreed that, in principle, all kinds of food and drinks are permissible.

The Fiqh Encyclopedia also reads: “It becomes clear to the one who reads in the various chapters on food in Fiqh books that, in principle, all kinds of food are permissible, and it cannot be ruled as forbidden unless there is a special evidence [that proves the prohibition].

Allah knows best.
