Donating the Entire Sacrifice of ‘Eed

Question:

Assalamu Alaykum. Is it ok to distribute the whole Udhya meat after cooking as beef/mutton biriyani?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, we say that there is nothing wrong – Allah willing – in distributing the meat of the ‘Uthhiyyah (sacrifice of ‘Eed) to the poor, whether the meat is cooked or raw. The sunnah is to divide it into three parts: [one part for] eating from it, [one part for] giving as gift, and [one part for] giving it in charity.

As for donating its entirety, then this is contrary to what is recommended.

An-Nawawi may Allaah have mercy upon him said in his commentary on Saheeh Muslim:

As regards eating from it, then it is recommended but not obligatory. This is our view and the view of all the scholars, except what was reported from some of the Salaf that it is obligatory to eat from it…..for the apparent meaning of this Hadeeth about the order of eating from it, along with the Saying of Allah (what means): {So eat of them.} [Quran 22:28]. The majority of the scholars understood this order to mean permissibility or that it is recommended.” [End of quote]

In order to be on the safe side, it is better to eat something from it.
