Question:

Assal?m alaykum warahmatullahi wabarak?tuh
What is the ruling on selling gold to jewellers because they use it to make jewellery for women and men is this permissible since women use it as a means of beautification and as for men gold is not permissible to wear.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

In principle, the permissibility of selling gold does not involve any problematic aspects. As for the possibility of using it in a prohibited manner, such as men wearing it or women displaying their beauty before non-Mahram (marriageable) men; this does not entail the prohibition of selling gold in general, because all lawful things can be used in a prohibited manner.

Rather, it is only forbidden to sell a lawful commodity if the seller knows that the purchaser will use it in a prohibited manner. In this case only, it is forbidden to sell it to him; otherwise it is not forbidden to sell it.

We advise you to refrain from delving into undue details and to ward off Waswasah (satanic whisperings) and disregard them given that they corrupt one’s mind and religiosity.

Allah Knows best.
