All Cleaning Detergents Are Lawful to Use Unless they Contain Something Forbidden

Question:

Assalamu alaikum, i get kinda obsessive by checking the ingredients. Because I have found out that in most of the detergents, fabric softener, cleaning agents, dish soap, etc. have Surfactants from animals (haram). I don't know what to do, I mean sometimes i don't know if it comes from animals, but most of the time it does, so i bought some vegan alternatives. But some of them contain alcohol, is it permissible? what about the smell, is it haram to breath it in during cleaning? My dad still wants to use the detergent with surfactants from animals for his clothes to wash, we do it separately. So i wash mine with the vegan option in the same washing machine after, is that also permissible? JazakAllahu khairan

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

You should avoid these whispers and thoughts, for they are all illusions that are not true. The basic principle is that all these cleaning detergents are lawful unless you are certain, a certainty upon which you can swear, that they contain something forbidden.

So, just avoid this obsession and do not pay attention to it. This obsession causes you, as well as those around you, hardship.

Using what contains alcohol is permissible if the alcohol has been transformed into a pure substance. Likewise, it is permissible according to those who are of the view that alcohol is pure, which is the view of a group of scholars whose view is permissible to imitate.

Allah Knows best.
