Question:

Subject: Islamic Validity and Meaning of the Name "Abid al-Awsaf ibn Sharif" deAssalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.I am considering the name “Abid al-Awsaf ibn Sharif” for a baby boy and would like to ask if this name is Islamically valid, appropriate, and meaningful. Here is a breakdown of the name:Abid (عابد): Meaning “worshipper” or “devoted servant”Al-Awsaf (الأوصاف): Meaning “the attributes” or “qualities” — referring to praiseworthy characteristics or descriptionsIb

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

This name is not suitable, so we do not recommend naming your son with it. Even if it is meant to have a good meaning, like loving good qualities and noble morals, it should still be avoided, because it may be misunderstood as implying servitude to someone other than Allah the Almighty.

Lastly, the noble and beautiful names are many, and there is no need for such a name which you have mentioned.

Allah knows best.
