Ruling on Working for a Company Involved in Some Ḥaram Activities

Question:

I work at a software company where I help users with issues related to our product, which detects objects (e.g. people, cars, buses etc.) in images. The company has online publicly visible community spaces where users post questions or share content, sometimes with music or women without hijab. I have moderator access but can only delete. posts that break company rules; removing others risks my job. Since I can’t remove such posts, is my work permissible in Islam or am I sinful for leaving them?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

You are not to be held accountable for customer inquiries and for addressing

their problems related to your products, and this does not affect the permissibility of your work as long as you do not engage in or intentionally assist in anything forbidden. Allah Almighty says (what means): {No one will reap except what they sow, and no soul burdened with sin will bear the burden of another.} [Quran 6:164]

Also, Allah Almighty says (what means): {Every soul will be detained for what it has done} [Quran 74:38]

Lastly, it is sufficient for you to advise and forbid what is wrong as much as you can.

Allah knows best.
