Question:

Is ''If a large amount of a substance intoxicates, a small amount of it is prohibited'' a Hadeeth or a rule of Islamic jurisprudence? If it is a Hadeeth, what is its degree of authenticity and who has narrated it?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

"If a large amount of a substance intoxicates, a small amount of it is prohibited" is a Prophetic Hadeeth which was narrated by Abu Daawood may Allaah have mercy upon him in his Sunan; and by At-Tirmithi, Ahmad, Ibn Hibbaan may Allaah have mercy upon them on the authority of Jaabir may Allaah be pleased with him.

It was also narrated by Ahmad may Allaah have mercy upon him; by An-Nasa'ee may Allaah have mercy upon him; and by Ibn Maajah may Allaah have mercy upon him on the authority of ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr may Allaah be pleased with him. Shaykh Al-Albaani may Allaah have mercy upon him verified it.

This Hadeeth is considered Saheeh (authentic).

And Allaah Knows best.
