Question:

Did any of the Jews or Christians convert to Islam during the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam? Who were the Prophets killed by the Jews, as sated by Allah Almighty in the noble Quran?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Many Jews and Christians in Arabia and other places converted to Islam during and after the lifetime of Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. However, little were those who converted to Islam from among the Jewish leaders and monks who lived in Al-Madeenah and around it at that time. It was narrated by Al-Bukhari, Muslim and others may Allaah have mercy upon them that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said, "If ten of the Jews believed in me, all the Jews will believe in me." This is the wording of Al-Bukhari.

According to the wording of another narration, he, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said, "…all of them will believe in me." [Ahmad]

Commenting on the hadith, Al-Hafith may Allaah have mercy upon him said:

He meant ten specific figures of the Jews, because more than ten of the Jews indeed believed in the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. It seems that those ten were chiefs among the Jews while other Jews were their subordinates. Just little of those embraced Islam, such as ‘Abdullah ibn Salam.

Only ‘Abdullah ibn Salam and Mukhayreeq of Banu An-Nadheer may Allaah be pleased with them converted to Islam from among the Jewish rabbis. But there remained ten of their chiefs and rabbis who did not convert to Islam, and they had control over others. It is possible that these people were those meant by the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, in the hadith, as Al-Hafith may Allaah have mercy upon him commented.

The Quran did not mention the Prophets who had been killed by the Jews. Rather, they were generally mentioned in several verses, including the verse in which Allah Almighty says (what means): {That was because they [repeatedly] disbelieved in the Signs of Allah and killed the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and were [habitually] transgressing.} [Quran 2: 61]

It was also reported through some citations that they killed Zakariyya (Zachariah) and Yahya (John), may Allaah exalt his mention.

Allah knows best.
