Question:

What is the secret of the Christmas tree for the Christians? What is the kind of this tree?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam,  is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, it should be known that, as Muslims, we are not interested in knowing the secret behind the Christmas tree or its various kinds. Knowing this matter is of no use and ignoring it does not harm. However, our need to know the rulings of our religion and the wisdom of our Sharee‘ah is far greater. A Muslim should devote his efforts and life in this aspect.

However, in order to respond to your query, we will mention to you something that we read about the Christmas tree which was written by the Christians:

1- This tree has nothing to do with the New Testament which includes many gospels, the revelation of John, epistles of Paul and Catholic epistles. This tree is connected with the Roman festivals and customs. This means that such a tree is not related to Christianity.

2- It is a symbol of a story that the soldiers of Herod, a Roman king who converted to Judaism, were about to arrest the holy family (according to them they mean: ‘Eesa and his mother, may Allaah exalt their mention) who were on their way to Egypt. Then, one of the trees stretched its branches and hid the family. Consequently, God Rewarded it by making it evergreen. Hence, it is a symbol of eternity.

3- Christians admit that this story is not true and said that such a tree became a holy symbol of the originally idolatrous festival.

This is the information which we found on one of their websites and the responsibility of the veracity lies on the one who said that. However, this matter does not interest us as we previously clarified.

Allaah Knows best.
