Question:

Please tell me how to do Funeral Prayer.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

The conditions which are required for a regular prayer are the same for the funeral prayer.

In the funeral prayer, the Imam should stand by the chest for the male body and by the middle for the female body. The people led in prayer should stand in rows behind the Imaam and it is desirable to make many rows. The Imaam and the people led in prayer should make the intention of performing the funeral prayer, then the Imaam should say Allaahu Akbar and the people behind him should follow him.

The funeral prayer is performed with four Takbeer (Allaahu Akbar). After the first Takbeer, one recites chapter Al-Faatihah, after the second Takbeer, he should read the Salat Ibraahimiyah (Allaahumma Salli 'Ala Muhammdin wa 'Ala Aali…) the one recited in the second part of Tashahhud during the prayers), and after the third Takbeer, he has to supplicate for the deceased, and then he says the fourth and last Takbeer; one may and may not supplicate for the deceased (after this last Takbeer) and then concludes the prayer with one Tasleem on the right side.

It is desirable to supplicate with the legislated mention confirmed from the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) if one memorizes it, otherwise one may supplicate with any good supplications for the dead.

Allaah Knows best.
