Muslims Living in non-Muslim Countries

Question:

Someone told that staying in a non-Muslim country is Haram. Is that true?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

So many former and contemporary scholars have issued the Fatwa that living in non-Muslim countries without any need or necessity is prohibited.

The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “The fire of Muslims should not be seen with the fire of polytheists.” Just imagine how it would be to live among them. But it is allowed at time of necessity, such as a business trip, gaining some knowledge that is not found in Muslim countries, for treatment, or because of fearing for one’s life in Muslim countries. In the above circumstances one may migrate to a non-Muslim country.

 Allah knows best.
