Repentance after Committing a Sin

Question:

What is the best way to repent for a sin one has committed?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Repentance from all kinds of sins and disobedience or violations of Islamic rules is obligatory on every Muslim. Allah has commanded His slaves to repent sincerely and has made it obligatory.

Allah Says (what means):

• {O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance.} [Quran 66:8] Allah loves every one who turns towards Him in repentance.

• {Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.”} [Quran 2:222]

No doubt, all human beings commit sins, but the best of them are those who turn to Allah in repentance. Whoever commits a sin, he should perform good deeds as much as possible. And it is commendable to perform ablution and pray two Rak'ahs and ask for forgiveness of Allah, with regret for what was done in the past and a determination not to return to that sin again, and return people’s rights and seek their forgiveness. If these conditions are met, then one's repentance would be considered as sincere. Allah may accept it and forgive all sins, Allah willing.

Allah knows best.
