Socializing with non-Muslims

Question:

Is it haram to socialise with non-Muslims people?
Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

 

It is permissible for a Muslim to deal with non-Muslim in the field of purchasing, selling and renting, and other things that are Islamically proven to be permissible. A Muslim may also marry women of the people of the Book, the Jews and the Christians, if they meet the Divine conditions that are well detailed in the books of Fiqh.

However, the relationship of a Muslim with a non-Muslim should not reach the state of love and compassion, or being an ally to them and supporting them because a Muslim is only permitted to show these traits to Muslims.

Allaah Says (what means):

  • {You will not find a people who believe in Allaah and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allaah and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their kindred. Those — He has decreed within their hearts faith.}[Quran 58:22]
  • {Allaah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes — from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allaah loves those who act justly. . Allaah only forbids you from those who fight you because of religion and expel you from your homes and aid in your expulsion — [forbids] that you make allies of them. And whoever makes allies of them, then it is those who are the wrongdoers.}[Quran 60:8]

Therefore, Allaah Has clarified to us that it is permissible to be just and kind to the non-Muslims but He forbade us from all forms of loyalty to them, among which is loving them or congratulating them on their days of festival. Allaah Says (what means): {O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies, extending to them affection}[Quran 60:1]
