Earning Money for Hajj

Question:

Is earning the expense money for Hajj obligatory on every Muslim?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The Muslim is not ordered to look for money in order to perform Hajj nor is he asked to take loans for this purpose. What is obligatory on him is to obey Allah and perform Hajj if he is physically able whenever he gets enough money to provide for Hajj expenses. He should answer the call of Allah. Allah Says (what means): {And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way.} [Quran 3:97]

{…for whoever is able to find thereto a way}, means those who can physically and financially afford the expenses and hardship of Hajj. The reason for the obligation of performing Hajj is this ability, and if it is lacking, then the person is not ordered to search for it. In fact, Muslims are not required to make themselves eligible for performing any form of worship.

Allah knows best.
