Wearing Hijab

Question:

Why is it wrong to take the Hijab after a person has been wearing it for 7 years? Is it true that if a Muslima takes off the Hijab that Allah will never bless her or her children?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Hijab which should cover entire body of the woman, including the head and hair, is compulsory upon all Muslim adult women.  This is known by evidence from the Quran, Sunnah and consensus of the Muslim scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them.  So, it is unlawful for a Muslim woman to give it up.

Among the Hijab’s most important benefits is that it covers the woman and protects her from evil looks.

Moreover, a woman who wears Hijab in adherence to the command of Allaah, gets a great reward for doing so.  Allaah Says (what means): {And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their head covers over their chests.}[Quran 24: 31]

What is meant here is that a woman should cover her head with a veil, and it is desirable for her to cover her face.  Imaams Ahmad and Ash-Shaafi'i may Allaah have mercy upon them were of the opinion that a woman should cover her face. In fact, all the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them agree that a woman should cover her face if she fears temptation.

After this introduction, we say that if Allaah Has Bestowed upon a woman this great favor of covering herself for seven years – as you mentioned – it is unlawful for her to give up the Hijab, as it means refusing to obey Allaah and engaging in sin; this is indeed a great danger.

An-Nasaa’i, At-Tirmithi, Ibn Maajah and Ahmad may Allaah have mercy upon them narrated that “the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) used to say the Du’aa' (supplication) for travelling whenever he travelled and he would seek refuge with Allaah from returning to disbelief after believing and from returning to disobedience after obedience, from good to bad, and from righteousness to sin….The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) used to seek refuge with Allaah from turning from obedience to sin.

Voluntarily and willingly giving up an act of obedience is a sign of perversion and corruption.  Therefore, we advise you not to take off your Hijab in order to protect yourself from being exposed to the Wrath of Allaah.

Allaah Knows best.
