Making Pledge to Shaykhs, etc.

26-9-2001 | IslamWeb

Question:

Can we make any pledge (Bayath) to any Sheiks or Walis?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The answer for this question depends on the kind and the subject on which the pledge is made.

If the pledge is made to cooperate in righteousness and to fear Allah, then it is permissible, and fulfilling such a pledge becomes an obligation on everyone who has accepted it.

If the pledge is made on that which is forbidden in the Sharee’ah, particularly the pledge to Shaykhs of at-Tareeqah (Sufism) to abide by their Tareeqah which contain so many deviations and innovations, then it is forbidden and one should avoid enrolling himself into such pledges.

Allah knows best.
