Should Husband Purchase Airline Ticket for Wife-to-Be to Wedding

Question:

I live with my family in the United States. I got married, last year to someone, from my original country, who does not live in the United States. We are planning to have the wedding in our country this summer. Is he responsible to pay for my airline ticket since by law he is my husband, or should my parents pay the ticket?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

If the marriage contract has been completed, then the husband would be obliged to bear the maintenance of his wife. Paying for her compulsory tickets to join him is also among the compulsory maintenance; so, he has to pay them.

However, if the marriage contract has not yet been completed, then the fiancé is not obliged to bear any expenses.

Therefore, the girl or her parents should pay for the tickets to bring her for her marriage.

Allah knows best.
