Question:

I was wondering about the way the Prophet, sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, dressed. What is the Sunnah way of dressing? Are pants ok?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) had many ways of dressing; among them are the following:

Qamees (shirt): Imaam Ahmad, Abu Daawood and at-Tirmithi may Allaah have mercy upon them reported from Umm Salamah may Allaah be pleased with her that she said, "No clothing was dearer to the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) than (his Qamees) the shirt."

Al-Izaar (waist sheet) and Ar-Ridaa (a sheet covering the upper part of body) as narrated in Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

Turban, as narrated in Saheeh Muslim from Amr bin Al-Huraith may Allaah be pleased with him.

Generally, a man can wear what is convenient for him provided the dress is not silky or too long, or prohibited in Sharee'ah (Islamic legislation). Know that Al-Qamees was the dearest dress to the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). It is desirable to wear white according to the saying of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ): “Wear your white garments, for they are among your best garments, and shroud your dead in them.” [Ahmad and others]

Allaah Knows best.
