Question:

1) I read from some references that Muhammad (SallAllaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) is a descendant of Ismael (Alaihi As-Salaam), 40th generation from his 2nd son Kedar (Alaihi As-Salaam). Could you give me details of the genealogy of Muhammad (SallAllaahu Alaihi wa Sallam) uptil Ismael (Alaihi As-Salaam).
2) I want to know the genealogy of Zakariyyah (Alaihi As-Salaam), and Yunus/Jonah (Alaihi As-Salaam), could you help me to get it?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The lineage of the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) which all the scholars agree upon is: Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) ibn 'Abdullaah ibn 'Abdul-Muttalib ibn Haashim ibn 'Abd Manaaf ibn Qusayy ibn Kilaab ibn Murrah ibn Ka'b ibn Lu'ayy ibn Ghalib ibn Fihr ibn Malik ibn an-Nadhr ibn Kinanah ibn Khuzaymah ibn Mudrikah ibn Ilyaas ibn Mudhar ibn Nizaar ibn Ma'ad ibn 'Adnaan. There is no consensus regarding who goes beyond 'Adnaan. However, there is a consensus that 'Adnaan is among the offspring of Ismaa'eel may Allaah exalt his mention.

One of the narrations about the lineage of 'Adnaan gives him the following lineage: 'Adnaan ibn Udd ibn Muqrim, ibn Nahur ibn Yatrij ibn Yaarub ibn Yashjub ibn Thaabit ibn Ismaa'eel. The historians stated that Ismaa'eel may Allaah exalt his mention had twelve sons; they were Nabt, Qa'dar, Owbeel, Mabsha, Mosmia, Dama, Mas, Odad, Watoor, Nafees Tama, and Qaidman.  According to some Arab dialects, there is a slight change in the pronunciation of the above names; instead of Owbed they pronounce it as Awbal, Mobsha as Mobsham, Dama as Dma and then the other names as Heddad, Taim, Yatoor, Nofis and Qadmin.

Some historians are of the opinion that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is from the children of Qedar ibn Ismaa'eel may Allaah exalt his mention. (See Sifat as-Safwah written by Ibn al-Jawzi). They say an-Nabt is the son of Qa'dar ibn Ismaa'eel may Allaah exalt his mention. As for the lineage of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) Yoonus may Allaah exalt his mention Imaam Ibn al-Jawzi may Allaah have mercy upon him wrote in his book (Al-Muntadhim): Yoonus ibn Matta, Matta is his father and he belongs to the children of Binyameen ibn Ya'qoob may Allaah exalt his mention.

Imaam Ibn Katheer may Allaah have mercy upon him reported from al-Haafith Ibn 'Asaakir may Allaah have mercy upon him that the lineage of the Prophet Zakariyya may Allaah exalt his mention is as follows: Zakariyya bin Barkhiyah. It is also said that his father's name was Dan, or Zakariyya ibn Ladn, son of Muslim, son of Sadam, son of Hashyan ibn Daawood ibn Sulaymaan ibn Muslim ibn Siddeeq ibn Barkhiyah ibn Bla'tah ibn Nahoor ibn Shalorm ibn Bahna Shat ibn Enamin ibn Rahaban'am ibn Sulaymaan ibn Daawood, may Allaah exalt their mention.

Allaah Knows best.
