Question:

I am an undergraduate student of computer sciences in Pakistan. Recently I joined an institution ,madrassah, for a 2 years short course to learn Quran Tafseer, Hadith, Fiqh and Arabic Language. But now my parents have stopped me from going there. For past 2 or 3 yrs or more perhaps, I have been attending lectures and all...arranged in the community by different Ulamah....my parents never objected to that. But now they arent allowing me any more...they say that once or twice a month is okay but not more than that...but I seriously want to continue with this course. I have the right to know what my religion, my book and hadith have to say to me...I have spent 15 yrs obtaining all sorts of expertise in this world but now I want to have real Ilm. Keeping all this in mind ...that my parents have said a NO, very strictly to my going there...I want to ask can I go there without bringing it to my parent's notice? as in is it okay If I go there without their consent? or what should I do? JazakallahWassalam

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is more appropriate for you to try your best to convince your parents to accept your studying Sharee'ah sciences in order to combine between obeying them and studying the Sharee'ah. Now, if they refuse without a legal excuse, and if the knowledge you are seeking is about individual obligation and there is no other way to get this knowledge, then there is no objection to your studying without their consent provided you adhere to all the rulings concerning women, like wearing the Hijaab and never staying in seclusion with non-Mahram men and provided this will not cause you any harm like being chased away by your parents from the family's home. If they object to your studying for a legal reason like their need for your house work and services, or if the knowledge your are seeking is among the communal obligations, or a supererogatory knowledge, then it is unlawful for you to go out without their consent and you could get satisfied with cassettes, books and your attendance of a lesson or two that your parents accept you to attend.

Allah knows best.
