Naming son "Mumin"

Question:

I have a son and named him "Mumin". Is that is wrong to call him Mumin?

Answer:

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions. It is more appropriate and safer to avoid calling one's child "Mumin" as such a name embodies some arrogance. Allah Says (interpretation of meaning): {…So ascribe not purity to yourselves. He knows best him who fears Allâh and keep his duty to Him [i.e. those who are Al-Muttaqûn (pious)].}[53: 32]. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) rejected calling children with names like "Barrah" (righteous). The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said (commenting on such a name): "Do not give yourself a status that exceeds yours. Indeed Allah Knows better the righteous people amongst you" . Names like Mumin, Mutaqi, Muhsin are similar to Barrah. We add that someone might ask about this person called Mumin saying: 'Is the Mumin there?' And if that person is not there the answer will be: "No". this can imply a bad connotation like: 'There is no Mumin (believer) in this house'. Allah knows best.
