Performing ‘Aqeeqah for the Newborn Child

25-6-2003 | IslamWeb

Question:

My baby was born last Thursday and I could not make Aqiqa in the following Wednesday because the butchers in my area do not work on that day. Could I do it on Thursday?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

For all rulings concerning ‘Aqeeqah, please refer to Fatwa 83120.

As for your question, the Sunnah is to perform ‘Aqeeqah on behalf of the newborn on the seventh day after his/her birth, or the fourteenth day, or the twenty first day. So, if you could not perform the ‘Aqeeqah of your newly born child on his/her seventh day, you could delay that to the fourteenth or the twenty-first and this is not a restricted matter, praise be to Allah.

For more benefit on the 'Aqeeqah, please refer to Fataawa 134400, 137090, 436102, 175709, 188507, 353419, and 376363.

Allah knows best.
