Question:

What is the difference between Satan and Jinn?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Imaam Ibn Abdul-Barr may Allaah have mercy upon him said: "The Jinn according to the linguists and scholastic theologists, are of different degrees: when they mean "Jinn" in general they call them "Jinni", if they mean the kind of "Jinn" that obsesses human beings, they call him"Aamir", the plural is "Ummar"; if they refer to the kind that appear to the children they call them "Arwaah", if they are malicious and transgress in evil they are called devils, and if they are stronger than devils and more wicked than them, then they are called "Afareet", the singular of which is "Ifreet".

Allaah Knows best.
