Question:

The Fatwa about celebrating Ramadan 16th the day of Badr? Taraweeh 8 and 20 Rak'ah. Which is lawful?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

With regard to the numbers of Rak'ahs in Taraweeh prayer, please refer to Fataawa 85638, 82508 and 82507.

As regards celebrating the day of Badr or any other day, then this is not allowed. However, it is permissible for a Muslim to remind his Muslim brothers in the Friday Khutbah or at any other occasion of this great day which Allaah called the "Furqan" (the day of distinction between truth and falsehood) in which Allaah granted victory to the Muslims over the non-Muslims in order to encourage them [Muslims] to prepare for the defense of Islam.

Allaah Knows best.
