Hanging small size Quran in necks

Question:

It is a common practice of Muslims in India and Pakistan that they wear Taaweez (amulets) of very small size Holy Qur'an around their neck. Is it permissible or not?

Answer:

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

Some scholars permitted hanging Tamima (amulets) if they contain only Qur'an.  But the most correct opinion and the one that goes along with the evidence is that wearing amulets is unlawful even if they contain only Qur'an.  The evidence is the Hadith reported by Ahmad that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: "May Allah not achieve (the aim) of the one who wears Tamima (amulets)".

So, wearing amulets that contain only Qur'an is unlawful to close the door in front of those who might wear other kinds of amulets which are considered Shirk (polytheism).

The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: "Incantations, amulets and At-Tiwalah(Bewitchment, in order to make a person fall in love with another) are polytheism". [Abu Dawood, Ahmad…].

It is also feared that those who wear amulets that contain only Qur'an may disrespect it while they are ordered to highly regard it.

Allah knows best.
