Carrying Qur’anic verses to ward off evil

Question:

Some people carry some Qur’anic verses in a small medal tied around their waist to prevent Satanic disturbances and for safety. Is this allowed in Islam? It is very common among the Indian Muslims.

Answer:

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

The people of knowledge differed with regard to this kind of amulets.  Some permitted them and some forbade them.

However, the most preponderant opinion is that it is not permissible.  This is the opinion of Ibn Masoud and Ibn Abbas (Radiya Allahu Anhuma).  This is because it is forbidden in general to wear such amulets and also it may lead to wear what is not Qur'an.

Moreover, if one has the Qur'an or verses of Qur'an he may cause their humiliation such as by taking them in toilet or the like.

Allah knows best.
