Question:

I am a young Muslim from Asia, presently living in Canada. My parents are back home, they (my parents)are forcing me to get married. I tried very hard to convince them that I am not ready to get married right now due to the following two reasons:1- I am studying Islam and soon, inshallah, I will be leaving to Saudi Arabia for Islamic study.2- I do not like to stay in Bilad Kufur and raise my children here.My parents are using most force. I tried to talk; it is not working with them. Please advise me, and what should I do.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

Some scholars are of the opinion that obeying parents is an obligation as far as the matter of marriage is concerned.  Al-Buhooti may Allaah have mercy upon him from the Hanbali School of jurisprudence said: "Imaam Ahmad may Allaah have mercy upon him said that one has to obey his parents since he is obliged to be dutiful to them."  Then the author reported from Ibn Taymiyyah may Allaah have mercy upon him that: "They (the parents) have no right to force their son/daughter to marry someone they do not like, exactly as they have no right to force them to eat what they dislike."

Therefore, we advise you to hasten to get married.

Allah Knows best.
