Boys and girls mixing

Question:

Is it ok for a girl of age 12 to sit next to a boy or sit in front a boy every day at school (Muslim boy or non-Muslim boy)?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

Mixing between male students and female students in schools is forbidden in Islam as it causes much mischief, leads to committing adultery, or fornication, and transgressing the limits of Allaah. Mixing between males and females has great disadvantages and terrible consequences. The best evidence in this regard is what non-Muslim countries are experiencing with regard to widespread mischief and diseases, because of this mixing. So it is not permissible for a Muslim girl to sit next to a boy whether he is a Muslim or not, at school or elsewhere.

The guardians have to fear Allaah, the Most-High, about their guardianship, as they will be questioned about them on the Day of Judgment. If a Muslim female wants to study, she has to study in girls' schools, if any, where there is no mixing. Because sitting everyday next to boys is a widespread mischief and its danger is great so it is not permissible at all. We have been informed that in Australia there are Muslim girls' schools; so you have to resort to them or else resort to home schooling if either of the guardians are capable of doing so.

Allaah knows best.
