One scholarship per family but both members want it

Question:

I'm going to apply for studying scholarship in a university for the engineering course. My husband also intends to do so. But the problem is the scholarship only can be given only to one person in a family. So if we lie that we are still not married, is the scholarship that we will get are Haraam? I once heard that if the scholarship is not limited, then it is permitted. But if it is limited only too little number of persons, and by getting the scholarship will make other people not getting it, it is Haraam. Is it true?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is not permissible to lie about the circumstance mentioned in the question except if the Muslims are in a great need for this kind of expertise while other Muslims are not able to be admitted to it in order to fulfil the need, and the only way to be admitted to it is by lying.

The best thing in this case is to use Tawriyah (saying something which has more than one meaning and intending a meaning different from what the listener is likely to understand). This is discussed in Fatwa 88652 and 88695.

Allaah Knows best.
