Question:

An aunt of mine frequently sees devil/Satan at her home. She even shifted to 3 different locations so far, but still the devil keeps showing himself to her, and she is so disturbed and terrified about it. How can she stop this from happening? Please advise, with a Hadeeth, or two, if possible.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

Allaah may inflict some devils on some houses as a way of afflicting and testing those who are dwelling in it, especially when they are negligent about the remembrance of Allaah, which is one of the means of being protected from Satan. Many texts in the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of His Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) urge us to remember Allaah and to recite His Book. These texts clarify that by doing so, a person achieves happiness regarding his religion and his worldly matters and protects himself from what he fears. Some texts have been mentioned urging us to recite specific chapters and designated supplications which protect a person from Satan, like reading chapter Al-Baqara (the Cow). The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Satan flees away from the house in which chapter Al-Baqarah is being recited." [Muslim] Al-Bukhari may Allaah have mercy upon him reported that "Whoever reads Ayat Al-Kursi (chapter two, verse: 255) when he resorts to his bed, he will be protected by Allaah from every evil, and Satan will not come near him." The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) also said: "Nothing will harm the person who says three times every morning and every evening: (Bismillaahi Al-Lathi Laa Yadhurru Ma'asmihi Shay' Fil-Ardhi Walaa Fis-Samaa' Wahowa As-Samee' Al-'Aleem) [In the Name of Allaah with whose name nothing is harmed on Earth nor in the heavens and He is the Samee' (The All-Hearing), the Al-'Aleem (The All-Knowing)]."

Any remembrances of Allaah is beneficial, so one has to always recite the designated remembrances especially those of the morning and evening.

Lastly, we draw your attention to the following:

Sins are the major reasons of being afflicted by Satan; the most dangerous in this respect are songs and musical instruments.

Allaah knows best.
