Question:

My father and I are not speaking because my husband does not get along with him would I be punished.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

There is no doubt that not speaking to the father and cutting relations with him is being undutiful to him and this is one of the great major sins. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Shall I not inform you of the greatest sins?" (He repeated this thrice). The companions may Allaah be pleased with them said: "Indeed O, Prophet of Allaah!" He sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) replied: "Associating partners to Allaah and being undutiful to one's parents." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] So, cutting relations with the parents is one of the great major sins. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) further said: "A person who is undutiful to his parents will not enter paradise." [Ahmad] Your father having differences with your husband is not an excuse for you to be undutiful to him. Indeed Allaah ordered us to be kind and dutiful to our parents even if they are non-Muslims and they call to associating partners with Allaah.  Allaah says (which means): {But if they endeavour to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, do not obey them but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindness.}[Quran 31:15]. So Allaah ordered us to accompany them in this world with appropriate kindness, and they are the first persons who deserve this among the people. Indeed the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) was asked: "Who deserves my good company more?", and he replied: "Your mother, then your mother, then your mother, then your father." [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Therefore, you have to repent, dear sister, for cutting relations with your father and fear Allaah as His Punishment is very severe. We also advise you to endeavour to reconcile your husband and your father. You can seek the help of righteous and pious people and whoever can influence them. If they still do not want to reconcile, then you have to give each one his right, as the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Give every person his right." [Al-Bukhari]

Allaah knows best.
