The dwellers of the Fire will greatly outnumber the dwellers of Paradise

Question:

Where will there be more people - in the Paradise or in Hell. Is there any Ayah or Hadeeth that says about this?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

There are many texts from the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) which indicate that the number of the people who will enter Hellfire will greatly exceed the number of those who will enter Paradise. For instance Allaah Says (what means): {And most of the people, although you strive [for it], are not believers.}[Quran 12:103]. Allaah further Says (what means): {And Iblees (the devil) did prove true his thought about them, so they followed him, all except for a party of true believers (in the Oneness of Allaah).}[Quran 34:20]. In another verse Allaah Says (what means): {But few of My servants are grateful.}[Quran 34:13]. There are many verses in this context.

As regards the evidence from the Sunnah, Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri, my Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Allaah would call upon Aadam and Aadam would respond: "Here I am, O my Lord, and all the good is in Your Hands! Allaah would then say: "Bring out the denizens of Hellfire." Aadam would respond: "And who are they?" Allaah would say: “Nine hundred and ninety nine persons from every thousand," that is when the small child would become grey-haired and every pregnant woman would abort her pregnancy."

Allaah Knows best.
