Question:

How do we understand the Quran?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Allah revealed the Quran for people to ponder over it. The most important factor which would help a person to understand it is to learn Arabic because the Quran was revealed in Arabic.

On one hand, when one gets to know its styles and he would be able to understand the exact meaning of the verse. On the other hand, he would be able to read the books of Tafseer (interpretation of the meaning of the Quran) written by Muslim scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them and which are based on proper foundations in interpreting the Quran.

So if one is able to learn the Arabic language, then this is better, otherwise the Muslims translated the Quran to other languages to facilitate its meaning for non-Arabic speakers.

A great number of these books were translated to English, so you may read them and seek the help of Islamic Centers and organizations so that they would guide you to the best of these books.

Allah Knows best.
