Question:

Is the following narration authentic: “If you name a child Muhammad, do not beat him and do not deprive him”?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

The narration you inquired about in reported by Al-Bazzaar may Allaah have mercy upon him and narrated by Abu Raafi’ may Allaah be pleased with him. Al-Haythami may Allaah have mercy upon him said: 'It is narrated by Al-Bazzaar, from his Shaykh Ghassaan Ibn ‘Abeed, and it is classified as authentic by Ibn Hibbaan and others, may Allaah have mercy on all of them, but the chain of narrators is weak. Moreover, Shaykh Al-Albaani may Allaah have mercy upon him classified it as weak

Allaah Knows best.
