The ruling on reading the Quran in bars

Question:

Has Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allaah have mercy on him, said that it is permissible to read the Quran in the bar? I heard this from a person who claims to have knowledge.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

We have not come across any statement of Ibn Taymiyyah may Allaah have mercy upon him which suggests what you mentioned. As regards the ruling on this matter, the jurists may Allaah have mercy upon them stated that it is disliked to read the Quran in dirty places, they said that it is desirable to read the Quran in a clean place. Ad-Dussooqui may Allaah have mercy upon him said: 'It is disliked to read the Quran or to mention Allaah in the streets and in dirty places.'

It is known that bars are dirty places and they might even be stained with intoxicants; and intoxicants are impure according to the majority of the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them.

Allaah Knows best.
