Question:

What is the meaning of "There is neither might nor power except with Allaah."?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

"There is neither might nor power except with Allaah.", is an expression of submission and surrender to Allaah and acknowledging that one is fully obedient to Him, and that He is The One Who causes things to happen and no one can repel His Order, and that a person has neither control nor any power in his affairs. This expression is also explained as follows: that the person has no power in repelling the harm, and no might in obtaining good except with Allaah's Help. Or that there is no power from staying away from the disobedience of Allaah except with His Protection, and there is no will in obeying Him except with His Help; this is how Ibn Mas'ood may Allaah be pleased with him explained it. It is Imaam An-Nawawi may Allaah have mercy upon him who stated these meanings when explaining a narration reported by Muslim may Allaah have mercy upon him and said that all the explanations on this expression are close to each other.

Allaah Knows best.
