Question:

What is the ruling on a man who carried a sheep and it urinated on his clothes, and he only remembered while he was performing the prayer?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

The excrements of animals the meat of which we are allowed to eat are pure according to the most preponderant opinion of the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them. The evidence is that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) ordered the tribe of 'Uranah to treat themselves by drinking the urine and milk of camels as reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim may Allaah have mercy upon them. It is also confirmed that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) performed the prayer in sheep pens as reported by Muslim may Allaah have mercy upon him. There is no doubt that sheep folds are not free from their urine and excrements. Therefore, the urine of sheep is pure and it is permissible to perform the prayer in clothes touched by their urine.

Allaah Knows best.
