Question:

Assalamu alaikum. There is a haadeeth from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) which state that it is obligatory to follow the Qur’aan and that it is obligatory to follow his Sunnah, for example, the hadeeth in which he said: “I do not want to find any one of you reclining on his pillow, and when he hears of something that I have commanded or forbidden, he says, ‘Between us and you there stands this Qur’aan, whatever we find is permissible in it we will take as permissible, and whatever we find is forbidden in it we will take as forbidden.’ For I have been given the Book and something like it with it; it is like the Qur’aan or more.” This hadeeth is narrated in the books of Sunan and Musnad from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) with a number of isnads from Abu Tha’labah, Abu Raafi’, Abu Hurayrah and others. In this Hadeeth does it indicate that 1.Somethings that are prohibited is not there in Quran?and we should also look in Hadith? Because some people argue that what is not prohibited in Quran, not clearly mentioned like Music, drawing animals humans etc.we should not say prohibited. 2.The phrase"somethimg like it with it;it is like the Quran or more"indicates Hadith? 3.Could you give the reference like which Hadith book,Vol.No.etc this Hadith is mentioned? Was Salaam.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

The narration which the questioner referred to is authentic and it is reported by Imaam Ahmad may Allaah have mercy upon him on the authority of Miqdaad Ibn Ma'd Yakrib may Allaah be pleased with him (130/4) and it is reported by At-Tirmithi may Allaah have mercy upon him on the authority of Abu Raafi' may Allaah be pleased with him (37/5) and reported by Abu Daawood (200/4), Ibn Maajah (6/1), Al-Bayhaqi, At-Tabaraani, Al-Haakim, Ash-Shafi'ee and Al-Humdiy, may Allaah have mercy upon all of them.

The wording of the narration reported by Ahmad may Allaah have mercy upon him is: "Beware! I have been given the Quran and the like of it with it; yet a time will come when a man replete on his couch will say: "Keep to the Quran; what you find in it to be permissible treat as permissible, and what you find in it to be prohibited treat as prohibited." Beware! The domestic ass and beasts of prey with fangs are not permissible to you…" Shu'ayb Al-Arna'oot may Allaah have mercy upon him said: "Its chain of narrators is authentic.'', and it is classified by Al-Albaani may Allaah have mercy upon him as authentic as well.

Abu Daawood may Allaah have mercy upon him reported the narration with a weak chain of narrators: "I swear by Allaah, I admonished, enjoined good and forbade evil, and it is like the Quran or more than it."

Therefore, the above narration is evidence that what the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) forbade is like what Allaah forbade in His Book, as the Messenger sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) conveyed on behalf of Allaah.

The religious rulings are not only taken from the Quran only, rather they are taken from the Quran and the Sunnah, as clarified in the above narration. For instance, it is forbidden to eat a domestic ass, and it was prohibited by the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) similarly, beasts of prey with fangs are not permissible for us, and they were prohibited by the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). Simultaneously marrying a woman and her maternal or paternal aunt is forbidden, and this was prohibited by the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and there are many other examples like this (the prohibition was made by the prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and not mentioned in the Quran).

A call to remove the Sunnah from legislation is a call to stray from religion.
