Question:

Salam, Can i name my child Yaseen, Taha. Is this appropriate according to Islamic Sharia.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Before answering your question, we would like to mention that we have already issued Fataawa 87262 and 82724 clarifying the general requirements when naming children, so please refer to them.

As regards your question; it is disliked to name a child with the name Yaaseen as it is a name of one chapter of the Quran. Ibn Rushd may Allaah have mercy upon him said: 'I asked Imaam Maalik may Allaah have mercy upon him: "Can any person be named with the name Yaaseen?, and he may Allaah have mercy upon him replied: ''I don't think that a person should be named with this name as Allaah Says (what means): {Yaa, Seen. By the wise Quran. Indeed you, [O Muhammad], are from among the messengers.}[Quran 36:1-3].'

Similarly, naming with the name Taaha is also disliked.

Allaah Knows best.
