Zakat on poultry

Question:

Dear Respected Scholars Asslaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah If someone does poultry farming, how does one pay zakat on this? Is the poultry considered as trade goods or like cattle/sheep etc is there a method for calculating zakat?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The Zakat on poultry is not like the Zakat on cattle, cows, camels and goats. Rather, poultry is treated as tradable items.

Therefore, if a person has a poultry farm, at the end of a lunar year he should calculate his cash money and the poultry that he has (by evaluating its value), then if the total of all that he possesses reaches the Nisaab (i.e. the minimum amount liable for Zakat), which is the equivalent of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver, then he should pay the Zakat on the totality, which is 2.5%, and he should pay the Zakat on the capital money and profits.

Allaah Knows best.
