Eating mushrooms which are grown where pigs are reared

Question

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We have already clarified in Fatwa 119689 that mushrooms are in principle lawful; because in principle all things are lawful unless there is evidence which proves that they are forbidden. The fact that these mushrooms are planted in a place where pigs are grazed, then if you mean that these mushrooms might be stained by some impurities of those animals like their saliva and dung and the like, then if one is sure or predominantly thinks that this is the case, then it is not permissible to eat the mushrooms except after washing them and purifying them from this impurity.

However, if you mean fertilizing the land with pig dung, then there is a difference of opinion among the jurists may Allaah have mercy upon them about the ruling of fertilizing the land with an impurity. The most predominant opinion is that it is permissible because the impurity is transformed inside the plant, so it becomes pure by transformation; it is like blood which is transformed in the organs of the animal to flesh and milk. Al-Bayhaqi may Allaah have mercy upon him reported in his “Sunan” that Sa’d Ibn Abi Waqqaas may Allaah be pleased with him used to fertilize his land with feces. Al-Bayhaqi entitled a chapter in the book of sharecropping in his Sunan: “A chapter on putting dung and feces in the land.

Allaah Knows best.
