Food that touches mustache is pure

Question

Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullaah. I want to know about drinks or foods that touch one's long moustache before eating it. Does that drink or food become haram?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Food and drinks do not become impure by touching a long mustache, because human hair and skin are pure (Taahir). Shaykhul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah may Allaah have mercy upon him wrote, “The basic principle is that all things are pure.” [Al-Fataawa Al-Kubra]

Trimming the mustache is an act of the Sunnah. As for letting it grow until it is long, some scholars held that it is prohibited. Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen may Allaah have mercy upon him was asked, “What is the ruling on growing the mustache and trimming the beard?

He may Allaah have mercy upon him answered:

This is impermissible. It is obligatory on the Muslim man to grow his beard, and trimming the mustache is a confirmed Sunnah. The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said, ‘Whoever does not take from his mustache, he is not one of us.’ Some scholars held that it is obligatory on the Muslim man to trim the mustache. They maintained that refraining from trimming the mustache is a major sin because the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, disowned the doer of such an act. One of the scholars who held that view was Ibn Hazm may Allaah have mercy upon him who said, ‘It is an obligation to grow the beard and trim the mustache.’” [Al-Baab Al-Maftooh]
