Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, we thank you for being keen on celebrating your marriage according to the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) so may Allaah reward you for this and bless your marriage.

You should know that the less the expenditure of a marriage is, the more blessed it is. Allaah Says (what means): {Verily, the spendthrifts are brothers of the devils.}[Quran 17:27] For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 85394.

As regards the Islamic marriage, Islam advocates happiness and gathering at the occasion of marriage, for instance it legislated marriage banquet, playing the Duff (a tambourine-like instrument without bells) while singing Islamic songs, and the Muslims greeting each other at this occasion. Marriage in Islam should be conducted according to what Allaah has legislated and permitted and what Allaah has prohibited should be avoided in it. So, there should be no mixing between men and women, no women showing their ‘Awrah (parts of the body that should be covered in Islam), no music, no dancing, no obscene singing and no other prohibitions.

As regards the marriage banquet, it is desirable and there are no particular rituals in celebrating it, but what fulfils the purpose and does not contradict his Islamic law should be done.

It is better to organize the marriage banquet after the consummation of the marriage, and it is disliked to only invite the rich to it. It should be noted that the marriage banquet is required to be done by the husband and not the wife; for more benefit, please refer to Fataawa 98859 and 88103.

Undoubtedly, it is not permissible for the marriage celebration to include any prohibition, but if this happens, it is not necessary that it will lead to dissension between the spouses, and it is most likely that this will happen, because acts of disobedience lead to disasters. Allaah Says (what means): {And whatever strikes you of disaster — it is for what your hands have earned; but He pardons much.}[Quran 42:30]

Allaah Knows best.
